Calypso and Reggae

We read about Jamaica, Calypso and Reggae for homework and this is the answer to task that followed.

What do I think of Calypso and Reggae?

I think reggae is pretty cool, it have a lot of rhythm, and it is good dancing music. The filing of the music is kind of jolly, but on the same time the theme in the songs can be serious. You can hear that drums are important in the music and it makes the rhythm more alive and catchy, but it is also a bitt slow and it does not have to be very complicated to sound good.
So, I like reggae because it have good and catchy rhythm, and it is not too noisy.

Calypsos have a rhythm that goes a little bit faster than reggae, but it is less instruments in it. There is also a lot more repetition in calypso and the texts are a little boring, but I like this music style too.

Nyhetsvakt

Palestina angriper, og Israel slår like hardt tilbake. Det har vært mange forsøk på fredshandlinger, men noen viktige faktorer gjør at det er vanskelig å finne en løsning som begge vil godta.

On school we have worked with a movie called “Mississippi Burning” and the discrimination and violent that was directed toward the colored people in this period.

This is the task I chose when we were writhing at school: Imagine you are a teenager living in the South in the 1960s. Write a diary entry (or more) where you reflect on the situation.

June 21. 1962

Two more days now, and the holiday begins.
Tow more days now, and my life will become a living hell.

Earlier this morning, when I walked to school I heard someone screaming. Some boys, white boys, of my age were pushing my friend around and he landed in the dusty trench. “Hey, Blackie, that rock over there looks just like you face”, they said. I was so angry, I wanted to scream, but I did nothing. I just walked past them with my eyes on the ground. The boy they had called “Blackie” was one of my few friends. His name is Bobby. His skin is much darker than mine, and everyone else’s. That is why the white, older boys always are mean to him and not me. They appear at our school and beat him up, once or twice a week. It is nothing we can do. Their fathers are high ranked in town, and I do not dare to think of what could have happened if we did something to hurt or resist them.

Love and shame, Lilly

June 22. 1962

One more day now, and the holiday begins.
Hell came one day earlier than expected.
It hurts, but I am glad
I am glad, but I am also worried of what that will happen now.

The white boys came to our school in the lunch break, as i feared. “Blackie where are you, Blackie”, they shouted with a sing song voice. At that exact moment Bobby walked around the corner of our school building. In a few seconds they had surrounded him. They began pushing him around. "Blackie, the black one", they shouted. In that second I snapped. I could not take it any more. Bobby was always in pain, he had a black eye or a broken arm. I did something very brave then. I ran at them and kicked them as hard as I could. I just wanted to hurt them as much as they had hurt Bobby. Someone hit me in the face and I passed out, but now I am glad. I am glad because I dared to stand up and protest and not just lie down and get stepped on. On the 22 of June 1962 life became hell one day earlier than usual

Love and pride, Lilly

Wildlife and Pollution

The Norwegian philosophe Arne Næss was the founder of deep ecology. He was focused on using less energy and creating less pollution per head. Deep ecology is the wisdom of nature and it is the context between human’s life and the nature. The most important rule, is that humans, animals, mountains and plants are supposed to be equal. Everyone should have the same rights and standard of living. The deep ecology is a world view/philosophy with focus on the nature.
I think that Arne Næss deep ecology is very relevant for the text about pollution. Because the deep ecology is against unnecessary transport, or power stations that creates air pollution. For example all the cloths that is imported from China to Norway, or all the cars that drives around in the cities and makes flume and air pollution. I think that a lot of the pollution that is created today could be avoided if we tried to take better care of the nature, used less energy and had a smaller consumption.
The text “Wildlife” is about how humans ruin the animal’s natural habitation and overhunt so that the animals are threatened to be extricated. Another threat is the pollution from fabrics that damage the quality of the water sources and make animals sick or even kills them. I mention earlier that humans and animals are supposed to have equal rights according to the deep ecology. But the humans ruin the animals living conditions and do not treat them as equals.
We do not follow the general rule that sais “take care about what keeps you alive”. We do not take care of the animals, plants and earth that is our food sources and keep the nature healthy. This is a quote from Arne Næss that describes this very good:
The ecosophical outlook is developed through an identification so deep that one’s own self is no longer adequately delimited by the personal ego or the organism. One experiences oneself to be a genuine part of all life .. We are not outside the rest of nature and therefore cannot do with is as we please without changing ourselves ...
Paleontology reveals .. that the development of life on earth is an integrated process, despite the steadily increasing diversity and complexity. The nature and limitation of this unity can be debated. Still, this is something basic. “Life is fundamentally one.” (Arne Naess)

Of mice and men
In this assignment I chose task 2, which is to write about the dreams of several characters.  I am going to write about how hope and dreams are important in the book, Of Mice and Men.
This is a short plot summary of the book Of Mice and Men.                                                                 The story takes place in Soledad, California in the 1930s, during the Great Depression. We meet George and Lennie who dream about owning a small plot of land to live off, and a small house to live inn. It seems possible for their dream to come true, but then a few problems come up.
Hopes and dreams are important to the story because it is about living the American Dream, to start with nothing and end up with successes. The book is also about the Great Depression, and how the American Dream did not work out for everyone. According to kclibrary.lonstar.edu The Great Depression had become a nightmare. This sentence I think shows how the American Dream had become during the 1930s.
The main characters in the story are George and Lennie. They hope to live their dream together. Their dream is a typical American Dream. This we can see in the book Of Mice and Men on page 18 and 19, where George tells Lennie how it is going to be. The story is repeated several times in the book, which shows that the dream is always the same and does not change. To live their dream they have to save money, and work on ranches like many others.
Another character is the African man Crooks. His dream is different from George and Lennies dream. He dreams of equal rights between colored and white people. In the 1930s Africans and Native Americans did not have the same rights as white people. I think that is very unfair and not right. He also dreams about having friends and not being lonely. On page 64, in the book he is described as a person who kept his distance and demanded that others kept theirs. On the same time he talks about his childhood with his brothers, and how much he misses it. He also said "a colored man has to have some rights even if he does not like them". This I think shows that he wanted friends, and to be treated like every one else.
To conclude, I would say that hope and dreams are important to the story, because almost every character in the book hopes and dreams of something. Dreams are also very important because the American Dream is a central theme in the book. And that is about living your dream.
